(8.5 miles) This popular paddle began in 2002 with 21 kayaks making the inaugural trip from Neenah to Appleton. Originally launching from Doty Park, completion of construction led to a switch several years ago to the current launch site in Shattuck Park. Over the years, participation has included all types of human-powered craft and as many as 350 participants. In that time, participants have included all sorts of people and paddlers, mostly from the Fox Cities but often with others from well outside the area. The Tall Ships are back for 2013! This will be our third Tall Ships Paddle from De Pere to the mouth of the Fox River in Green Bay! The Tall Ships Paddle is planned to launch from Bomier Park in the City of De Pere, and pass through the De Pere Lock on the way through the City of De Pere, Village of Allouez and City of Green Bay. There will be plenty of fun activities and tours as the Tall Ship Festival will be in full swing when we arrive. Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Paddle: Appleton Locks PaddleLower Fox in Appleton |

The 2013 Appleton Locks Paddle will again launch from Lutz Park in Appleton and passed through all four Appleton locks on the way downriver to take out at Sunset Point Park in Kimberly, WI. 2013 will be the 4th year for this event, which has become a popular finale to the paddle season for many paddlers! More than 180 paddlers in 147 boats enjoyed great weather and unbelievable fall colors all along the river in 2012. The trip ends during the noon hour, leaving plenty of time to participate in Appleton’s incredible Octoberfest celebration! Starting at the Indian Trails Campground, the trip moves down the upper Fox River. Paddlers can expect to see plenty of wildlife and beautiful scenery on this exciting event. The trip ends at the historic Indian Agency House in Portage, which was built in 1832. As an added bonus to all participants the paddle will provide the opportunity to participate in the annual Portage Canal Days celebration. The paddle will begin at the White River Dam Landing and will end at Riverside Park in Berlin. Avid birdwatchers might get a pleasant surprise, as there are various birds to see during the trip. The flow of the river is a bit stronger here so as to provide some help in moving downstream. However, the trip is 12.5 miles so be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a snack for lunch. The first stop will be at Lake Butte des Mortes Park where paddlers will have the option to stop or continue on to Oshkosh. The paddle will launch from Arena, and after lunch at the highway 14 landing we will continue on to Spring Green. While in Spring Green, local tours can be made available, depending on time and interest. There will also be the option for group camping and campfire storytelling. In honor of the 75th anniversary of the Great River Road, The Keystone Chorus will perform selections of barbershop music, while stories of prohibition, sills, and bootlegging in the Prairie du Chien area will be shared. Historic interpreters present life in Prairie du Chien from the time of the fur trade through the Civil War. There will be Native American storytelling, demonstrations of various early 19th century crafts, open-firing cooking, a military encampment, and musket and cannon firing. The event is held on the grounds of the Fort Crawford Museum from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. both days. The Museum is open until 4 p.m., admission fee. | Time: 1:00pm. Address: 717 S Beaumont Rd.. Venue phone: 608-326-6960. Costumed interpreters present a guided tour of Prairie du Chien’s six historic cemeteries. The tour includes the Old French Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in existence in the upper Mississippi Valley; Cavalry Cemetery; then continues to St. Gabriel’s Cemetery located behind the oldest church structure in Wisconsin designed by Father Samuel Mazzuchelli; next is the Fort Crawford Military Cemetery, one of the smallest military cemeteries in the United States; and Lowertown/Evergreen Cemetery. The afternoon ends at the Brisbois Cemetery atop a bluff overlooking Prairie du Chien and the Mississippi River. The tour starts at 1 p.m. at the Fort Crawford Museum, admission fee.
